Position Summary:

The Associate Medical Director (Medical Affairs) is a key member of the Nordic team who will work closely with the Regional Medical Director and cross functional partners including commercial and market access to develop and execute the Nordic Medical plan for the ophthalmology programs.

This is an outstanding opportunity to help establish and grow the presence of Apellis across the Nordic region while serving as a member of the regional medical affairs team for the country cluster, which also includes the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The Associate Director (Nordics) is responsible for working with the field team to build out scientific exchange and generate medical insights in preparation for the potential launch of our first ophthalmology medication. The AD will work with the Apellis Medical Affairs team on scientific engagement within the Nordic medical community whilst building out local country engagement plans in the context of a broader medical launch plan.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and managing country medical engagement plan, leading the Apellis Nordic medical field team and advice-seeking medical activities. Work with the field team to collate insights to inform the regional cross-functional plan
• Lead medical affairs activities with the ophthalmic healthcare community across the Nordic region in accordance with local codes of compliance
• Define long-term tactical medical planning alignment with regional and organizational strategies and vision. Lead and implement the Apellis medical affairs commitment to medical education in local markets and therapy areas
• Through work with the regional medical director and cross-functional team, support in-person medical interactions with clinical bodies and health technology agencies across the region (Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway)
• Collaborate with the Nordic commercial lead and Nordic market access lead to identify specific communication gaps, collaborating with the cross functional team, medical director and regional communications lead on appropriate mechanisms for impactful communications
• Partner on cross-functional activities such as advisory boards, leading the data presentation and scientific exchange
• Ensure Apellis is operating in strict compliance with all local legislations and develop Apellis’ profile generally within the Pharma industry in this region
• Through cross-functional work,contribute to the development of Apellis UKINORD region, values and organisational culture, leading by example at all times

Competencies:

• Excellent understanding of local Nordic healthcare systems
• Excellent understanding of local Nordic codes of compliance and their practical implementation
• Ability to build and manage a field-based medical team
• Ability to coach, encourage and develop others

Scientific communication:

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation and facilitation.
• Excellent grasp of retinal science and the principles of data generation
• Ability to work independently and with flexibility to handle workflow in a fast-paced environment

Experience: 5+ years in a medical affairs role either in a pharma or biotech organization. Ophthalmology experience strongly preferred.
